KK vs AK odds: pocket kings against ace-king

Pocket kings (K♥ K♦) win 69.6% of the time against ace-king (A♠ K♣), lose 29.6% and tie 0.8%, all in before the flop. Equity: 70.0% to 30.0%.

Counted exactly over all 1,712,304 boards, not simulated. Equity counts a tie as half a win.

Why KK is the favourite

The pocket kings hold two of the four cards of their rank, so ace-king has only three aces left to catch up, and its other card is the same rank as the pair: pairing it does not help. That is why the pair is about a 70% favourite even against the best unpaired hand.

What it means for a call

An all-in call is right when your share of the pot is at least the price. With 30.0% equity, ace-king needs the pot to offer at least 2.3 to 1 to call against exactly pocket kings. In real hands nobody shows their cards: compare your equity against the whole range of hands that would bet this way, in the equity calculator or the preflop odds chart.

Suits change the numbers by a point or two: shared suits take flushes away from one hand. These are the suits shown above.
